I was in a coaching call with a client last week, and she said something that made me think:

“I built this business to have freedom, but now I feel less free than when I was employed. I’m just... always on. Always thinking about it. Always available.”

I see this so often. I even felt like this in the first few years of my own business.

Women who started their businesses to escape something - the 9-5, the commutes, the corporate structures, being told what to do - end up building something that requires the exact same need to give everything of themselves. Just with better aesthetics.

They work through dinner. They check emails at midnight. They cancel plans because something came up. They disengage with their lives outside of work. They’ve traded a boss for a business, and the business is a much more demanding boss.

You don’t have to put up with this. You can build a successful business that doesn’t require you to give EVERYTHING of yourself.

It doesn’t happen by accident. It requires structure.

The False Choice Between Success and Sustainability

There’s a narrative in business that goes something like this: if you want to grow, you have to sacrifice.

You have to be willing to hustle. To put in the hours. To delay rest until you’ve “made it.”

In other words, growth at all costs.

And if you’re not willing to do that, you don’t want it enough.

This narrative is designed to keep you small, busy and never quite satisfied.

Because the moment you build structure, boundaries, and systems? You stop being desperate. And desperate is what easy sales require. Right?

But sustainable businesses aren’t built on desperation.

They’re built on structure.

What Self-Abandonment Actually Looks Like in Business

It’s not always obvious.

It doesn’t always feel dramatic.

Often, it feels like dedication. Like care. Like professionalism.

You respond to client messages at 11 PM because you’re responsive.

You take on projects that don’t align because you don’t want to disappoint anyone.

You work through your boundaries because something came up.

You neglect your own business development because you’re busy serving everyone else.

You make decisions based on what will please your clients, your audience, your community, everyone except yourself.

And somewhere along the way, you stop knowing what you actually want.

You’re so busy keeping everyone else happy that you’ve lost the thread of your own ambition.

That’s self-abandonment. It’s subtle. It’s normalised. And it’s slowly burning you out.

The Structure That Changes Everything

Here’s the pattern I see in successful women who actually enjoy their businesses:

They’ve protected their own time first.

This might feel selfish. It’s not.

It’s the foundation.

If you don’t know when you’re thinking, creating, strategising, or working. If you don’t have time to work on your business, just in it. If it’s all just a blur of reactivity, then you have no business. You have a job that happens to be yours.

Real structure looks like this:

Thinking Time

Blocked. Recurring. Non-negotiable.

This is when you work on strategy. When you create. When you make decisions about your business.

Not checking email. Not in meetings. Not in service mode.

This is when you think like the owner, not the employee.

For many of the women I work with, this is Friday. Or Tuesday afternoons. Or early mornings before anyone else is awake. For me, it’s Friday and sometimes Thursday too.

Serving Time

This is when you’re available to your clients, your community and your team.

But it’s bounded.

You’re responsive during these hours. Outside these hours, you’re not.

This creates scarcity. People are more respectful of your time when they know you’re genuinely unavailable outside certain windows.

It also creates space for you to think.

Rest Time

Not guilt-laced rest. Not the rest you “earn” after you’ve worked enough.

Built-in rest. Protected. Regular.

For some people, this is every Friday afternoon. For others, it’s every Wednesday. For others, it’s certain weeks of the year.

The exact structure matters less than the consistency.

Your nervous system needs to know it’s safe to come down from the high alert of being ‘on’. And it can only know that if rest is predictable and protected.

The Decisions That Create Space

Structure isn’t just time blocking.

It’s also decision-making.

The most successful business owners I work with have made clear decisions about:

• Who they work with (and more importantly, who they don’t)

• What they offer (and what they’ve stopped offering)

• How much they’re willing to do (and where they’ve drawn the line)

• When they’re available (and when they’re genuinely off)

These decisions feel restrictive at first. But they’re actually liberating.

Because every decision you make removes dozens of smaller decisions.

You don’t have to wonder if you should take this client. You’ve already decided who you work with.

You don’t have to debate staying up late to respond to an email. You’ve already decided when you’re available.

You don’t have to feel guilty about rest. You’ve already decided you’re entitled to it.

What Happens When You Build This Foundation

I’ve watched women make this shift, and the changes are real:

• Their decision-making improves because they’re not reactive all the time.

• Their business grows faster because they’re actually strategising instead of just serving.

• They stay longer in their business because it doesn’t feel like drowning.

But here’s the part that really matters: they like themselves more.

Because they’re not giving everything anymore.

They’re honouring their own needs alongside their business’s needs.

And that’s the only way sustainable success actually happens.

The One Question That Changes Everything

If your business requires you to abandon yourself to make it work, the business model is broken.

• Maybe it’s restructuring your offerings so they’re easier to deliver.

• Maybe it’s just deciding that you matter as much as your clients do. And then building your business around that decision.

The Gentle Rebellion of Sustainability

This is what a gentle rebellion looks like in business:

• It’s not breaking the rules. It’s rewriting them.

• You don’t have to prove yourself through exhaustion. You don’t have to earn rest.

• You don’t have to choose between ambition and sustainability.

• You can build something that grows steadily, that serves people well, that keeps you sane.

In fact, that’s the only kind of business worth building.

Because success that costs you your health, your relationships, your peace of mind, that’s not success.

That’s a different kind of failure.

But a business that grows at a pace that actually fits your life? That helps people you genuinely want to help? That gives you space to rest, create and think?

You’re waiting.

Not consciously. It doesn’t really feel like waiting.

It feels like planning. Preparing. Getting ready. Learning just one more thing before you take that step.

But underneath all of that is a quiet question: “Am I allowed?”

Am I allowed to raise my prices? Am I allowed to say no to that client? Am I allowed to take a Wednesday afternoon off? Am I allowed to build a business around my own terms, not someone else’s rulebook?

And the, maybe, reassuring thing is that we’re all doing it. To some extent, everyone is living their life, making decisions or not based on this feeling of “Is that really ok?”

The harsh but true answer: nobody is coming to give you permission.

Not your mentor. Not your business pals. Not the person who got there first. Not the algorithm. Not your inner circle.

Most of us spent decades waiting for someone to say, “Yes, you can.” We think if we just prove ourselves enough, work hard enough, and are nice enough, that someone with authority would finally say the words we were waiting for.

And I don’t know about you, but I have been given permission before, through coaching, through therapy, through business pals and still not been able to take the step.

Here’s what I’ve learned: that permission slip was never real.

The Permission You’re Actually Looking For

When you dig under the surface, you find one of three things:

You’re waiting to feel confident enough. We think confidence comes first, and then we act. But it doesn’t work that way. We act, and then confidence follows. It builds from evidence. From doing the scary thing and surviving it. From keeping small promises to ourselves until you realise we’re someone who keeps promises. I wrote a whole article about this exact thing here.

Or you’re waiting to feel certain. We want the path clearly laid out before we take it. But certainty doesn’t happen before the leap. It happens after. We move with 60% clarity and 40% trust, and it becomes clearer once we’ve started. (And sometimes it doesn’t, and we adjust. That’s fine too.)

You’re waiting for external validation. We want someone else to confirm that our decision is the right one. That we’re good enough. That we deserve it. But seeking that validation is like asking someone else to live our lives for us. They can’t. Only we can.

The permission you’re waiting for is actually self-trust.

And self-trust is built, not granted.

What Self-Trust Actually Feels Like

It’s not fearlessness. It’s not certainty.

It feels like this: We make a decision. Our annoying inner critic questions it. And we listen to both, acknowledge both, and choose anyway.

We raise your prices. Our imposter syndrome screams. We feel it, and we send the email anyway.

We say no to something that looks impressive but feels wrong. Our ego resists. We feel the resistance, and we say no anyway.

We take a risk. We might fail. We might look foolish. We do it anyway.

And every single time we do this, something shifts inside.

Not dramatically. Not that day, not even that week.

But over weeks and months, we start to notice: we trust ourselves more. We question ourselves less. We stop needing external permission because we’ve become our own authority.

That’s what self-trust actually is. It’s not confidence. It’s not arrogance. It’s a quiet knowing that whatever happens next, we can handle it. We’ve handled hard things before. We’ll handle this, too!

The Small Decisions That Change Everything

We don’t build self-trust by making one enormous, life-altering decision.

We build it through small, consistent acts.

Saying no to something small. Not because we’re being difficult, but because it doesn’t align.

Protecting one hour of our week for ourselves. For thinking. For creating. For rest.

Making a decision without consulting five people first. Making it, living with it, seeing if it was right.

Raising our prices by 10%. Not waiting until we feel 100% ready.

Speaking our opinion online, even though it’s not the dominant narrative.

Leaving a conversation that shrinks us.

Admitting we’ve changed our minds.

Each one is tiny. But each one sends the same message to ourselves: “I lead my life.”

And that message, repeated, becomes identity.

And identity is power.

What Changes When We Stop Waiting

Here’s what I’ve seen happen again and again with the women I work with and in myself:

When you stop waiting for permission, you stop giving yourself the message you are not good enough.

You stop saying yes to things that drain you just to be liked.

You stop apologising for your ambition.

You stop shrinking to make other people comfortable.

You build a business around your energy, not against it.

You raise your prices.

You protect your time.

You say no more. And yes, more. But only to things that actually align.

Your confidence grows because you’ve kept promises to yourself.

None of this happens because you got permission.

It happens because you stopped waiting for it and started trusting yourself.

A Simple Permission Practice for This Week

This week, make one decision without seeking external validation first.

It doesn’t have to be big.

It could be:

• Saying no to something. Not explaining. Not over-justifying.

• Raising your rate for a new client.

• Sharing an opinion you’ve been holding back.

• Wearing something that feels like you instead of what’s expected.

• Make the decision. Sit with the discomfort if it comes. Notice what happens.

Notice what happens.

And notice how that evidence stacks up.

Because every time you decide without permission, you’re building the only permission that actually matters.

The kind you give yourself.

Not loudness. Not drama. Not becoming someone else.

It’s the quiet decision to lead yourself.

It’s saying, “This is what I need, and I’m going to create it, not ask for it.”

It’s honouring yourself enough to not wait for someone else’s green light.

That’s where personal power lives.

Not in being chosen.

In choosing.

It comes from making difficult choices.

It comes from speaking up.

It comes from saying no.

It comes from saying yes.

It’s complex, but confidence isn’t a personality trait.
It’s built through repeated actions that build self-trust.

And yet it still feels… stretched.

I know this all too well, I’ve worked all the hours, burnt out and had to find another way.

Most business owners don’t need more effort - They just need better support structures.

The Three Types of Support We All Actually Need

Structural support

We need systems, rhythms and clear priorities to work with. Not remotely sexy but seriously necessary.

One of the biggest problems I see in growing businesses is the lack of process structure. They become big overnight and rely on the founder to spin all the plates with no real system, structure or operating processes. Standard Operating Processes or SOPs may feel like a lot of work to establish or too advanced for where you are, but they save so much time long-term and ensure all your customers get the same service or experience. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen a customer complaint because there isn’t a process in place to deal with an issue, or even worse, there are issues in the business that could have been ironed out if there was a SOP in place. After working inside huge multinational businesses, I can safely say SOPs are the foundation of their success.

Understanding the rhythms of your business is just as important. Knowing when you’ll likely need extra help or when the perfect time to take a break is helps you, as the business owner, to stay sane.

Taking time off in slower periods or using that time to develop new ideas is a great example of working with your business's rhythms. Knowing and anticipating where these gaps might show up also stops the 4 am scaries from kicking in.

And understanding your own rhythms can be just as powerful. Knowing which weeks of the month you are most suited to different tasks can make your efforts so much more effective. Try having to do outwardly social things in those last few days, when hibernation is at the front of your mind, or sit and do admin when you're feeling most inspired, and you’ll quickly realise your attempts are futile.

Clear priorities can be the making or breaking of a business. Having no real aim or not having long term strategy can make everything a lot harder. Say you’re marketing a business and you’re sending out sporadic emails with no real plan, being reactive and not joining up the campaigns across all of your options, you’re going to get less impact than if you’d planned out a well thought out stratigic campaign. Same if you flit around doing different things month on month without it being part of the bigger plan. Flying by the seat of your pants is good for a time, but at some point, it will mean you are missing opportunities. If you want your business to grow, you need a strategic plan that highlights all the priorities and someone to deliver it. That may not be you, so think of that as part of your plan.

Emotional Support

We need to tap into our self-trust and create firm boundaries. It’s great to have a community of people around us, or a work bestie to cheer us on, but what we really need is that inner knowing that comes from self-trust. That instinct that we can take a leap and it will all be ok. No matter the outcome, it will be ok.

Self-trust isnt easy to come by. We can be confident and have a good understanding of where we want to go, but it’s often when we try the new thing that the self-trust waivers, and we fear the leap.

It’s something we need to constantly work on, something that’s built like a muscle. The goal is to get to a place where if things go wrong, we can detach the outcome from ourselves, because we believe in ourselves so deeply that we know we did our best. We can find room for improvement without it being about not being good enough.

Boundaries also tap into this. You may well be reading this and thinking, oh yeah, good one, I’m a founder/business owner, I don’t have time for boundaries. But burnout and dislike for a business are often found where boundaries haven’t been put in place.

We can be passionate about our business, hungry for it to grow and still put boundaries in place. Boundaries give us time to rest and allow ideas to formulate, they give you structure to work within, and they make you a better leader, friend and family member.

The people I admire most are those who are transparent about their boundaries with no hint of guilt. I’m looking at you, if you say ‘I’m collecting my child at … so I can do’, or ‘I don’t work Fridays’ or ‘I don’t work through August’, or ‘I’ve got therapy then so I’m not available’, etc.

You guys are leading the way in creating a work-life balance that works for you, not one that works for the corporate machine. Because we all want a successful business, but we weren’t born to just do that. No one is going to say ‘Ahh, she was great, she worked so hard and ran that really successful business in her 40’s at your funeral.’

Strategic support

We need clarity on what actually moves revenue, not to-do lists with endless tasks that might work, if we stand on our heads on a Tuesday at 3 pm.

When we want to grow our business, we are hungry. We will download the thing that promises results, read another book, sign up for another course, and find another guru to pin our hope on. And there is nothing wrong with any of that, but we need to be tuning into the things that actually work for US.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all strategy for every business. EVERY business is unique. Because every business is run by someone like you. With ideas, hopes and big goals, all unique. Of course, if you run courses, you can learn things from other course providers, or if you are an e-commerce business, you can gain insights by looking at the competition, but so often businesses become diluted by trying to be like others. What makes a lot of businesses successful is how they stand out from the competition, how they rebel, gently.

So whilst generic business advice is sound, and courses, coaches, programmes that give you an overall picture are great. You actually need support that is specific to you and your business. Now I would say that as a coach, wouldn’t I, but I have generic courses too (they need a dust off as I created them a few years ago now!!) and believe you can get support in many forms.

But if you combine structural, emotional and strategic support, you will grow faster, with more ease and more joy.

• Protect one CEO hour - work on your business, not in it.

• Remove one unnecessary task - delegate it, move it to a later date or just delete it altogether.
